The Dangers of Lint Buildup in Dryer Vents
There are two main dangers of lint buildup. The first and most common is dryer fires. When lint builds up and begins to clog the dryer vent, lack of airflow causes the dryer to take longer and work harder to dry clothes, which can cause the motor to overheat. According to the U.S. Fire Administration, more than 15,000 structural fires are caused by dryers every single year with lack of vent cleaning as the most common cause.
The second danger is specific to gas dryers. If the path through the dryer vent for carbon monoxide to escape becomes clogged, carbon monoxide can pose a serious threat in your home. Worst-case scenario, both of these situations can be fatal. This is why having your dryer vent professionally cleaned is so important.
How Often Should Dryer Vents Be Cleaned?
It’s recommended that dryer vents are cleaned once a year at a minimum. If it’s been longer than a year, we recommend contacting us and setting up an appointment as soon as possible. There’s a good chance that your dryer vent has a significant amount of lint buildup, and it’s best to err on the side of caution when dealing with something that can have such severe consequences.
