Why is the carpet darker on to edges close to the baseboards and under doors?

This is called carpet filtration and usually is more common on light or white carpet. It is caused by air flow through the carpet near where the wall meets the flooring by the baseboard or even a closed door. This happens over a long period of time. Carpet filtration is difficult to remove because the soil particles are so fine that they penetrate deep into the carpet pile and often into the backing of the carpet. With special effort, reasonable results can sometimes be achieved. To help prevent filtration soiling, vacuum and wipe the edges of the carpet on a regular basis.
